The stable's gimmick was a group of unsanctioned wrestlers aiming to become the best wrestlers in history; the group's three initial members Refugee Mike, Refugee Matt and Refugee Tim had each gained fame in the WWE For Extreme, although this connection was only implied. It is currently the largest stable in WWE For Extreme history.

History[]

The Beginning[]

Refugee Mike in 2006

The Refugees would begin at One Night Stand, when Refugee Matt, and Refugee Mike would be placed against the Extreme Hyphy Wrestlers (Faid and Captain Charisma). With the ECW Tag Team Championships on the line, The Refugees would pick up the victory, marking a new era in professional wrestling. The next night they would go back to singles competition for the night, with Matt failing to pick up the ECW Television Championship from Faid, and Mike beating Swift in the main event. The next week, things would continue, as Refugee Mike would compete in a Triple threat match against Kurt Angle and Chris Hunter, picking up yet another victory that week. Matt wouldn't have the same luck, competing in a Triple threat match himself for the Hardcore Championship alongside Swift, with both losing to Eric Draven.

Refugee Matt in 2006

The next week, Matt would pick up a victory over Mr. Kennedy. That same night, Matt would face off against Eric Draven in a non-title match, giving Mike his first loss since the formation of The Refugees. The next week, Matt and Mike would face The Goths (Chris Hunter & Eric Draven) with the ECW Tag Team Championships on the line. The match had a special stipulation that if The Goths lost the match, Refugee Matt would be awarded the Television Championship. The Refugees would go on to win the match, giving them a successful title defense, and Matt a brand new title. The next week, Refugee Matt would once again be booked against Mr. Kennedy, picking up another victory. Later that night, Mike would pick up a victory over Faid. After the match with Faid, Mike would get a microphone, and announce that he was sick of seeing Maria Kanellis with John Cena.

The next week, Matt was seen backstage with RAW Diva Fergie, asking her what it would take for her to manage the first team to hold every championship on ECW consecutively. Right after Matt was placed in a Television title defense, in a elimination triple threat match. Matt would go on to defend the title against Cody Diddychuk, and surprise opponent, Chris Hunter. The main event that night featured another Elimination triple threat, with ECW Heavyweight Champion Refugee Mike defending in a double title match against Hardcore Champion, Eric Draven and Tyson Tomko. The next week. Matt was placed in a match against Tyson Tomko, in a Television title defense, which Matt would defend with success. However right after the match, Refugee Mike was walking backstage, and was attacked by James Marrow in a 24/7 Hardcore title defense. Mike would successfully defend his title against James, and go on to have his regularly scheduled match that same night against Cody Diddychuk, which he won. After the match, Mike would invite Refugee Matt and Fergie down to the ring, telling them how he planned to defeat John Cena at SummerSlam for Maria’s contract. He then used the ECW Championship to clock Matt, followed by the RMM. He then delivered an RMM to Fergie before starting to leave. An enraged Matt challenged Mike to defend his ECW title next week, which the champion refused. He offered instead a shot at the Hardcore title, before Tyson Tomko interrupted. Tomko challenged Mike to defend the Hardcore title on the spot, and thanks to the 24/7 rule he was forced to. Tomko used his power to keep Mike at bay, before pulling out a table and lighting it on fire. He suplexed Mike through the burning table, continuing the assault with several power moves. Tomko missed a clothesline, however, and rammed his arm into the steel ring post. Refugee Matt got involved, using a chair to help Tomko. He missed, however, and caught Tomko with the weapon. Mike the took advantage and pinned Tomko, using the barricade for leverage, giving Mike another victory that night. The next week Matt would face off against Mike with the Hardcore Championship on the line. Matt defeated night to become the new Hardcore champion.

A third Refugee[]

Refugee Tim in August 2006

On August 22, 2006, "The Third Refugee" Refugee Tim would come into the scene. Refugee Tim would face off against Tyson Tomko in his debut, picking up a win. That same night, Refugee Matt would defend the Television Championship in a Triple threat match against Chris Hunter, and James Marrow. Chris Hunter would end up winning the match, taking the title from Matt. After the match, Hunter was challenged by Matt for a rematch. ECW General Manager Christian Cage answered the challenge on Hunter’s behalf, forcing the new Television Champion to defend his title against Refugee Matt. The match didn't turn out so well, resulting in a double-knockout, which caused Hunter to walk away with the title. Earlier that same night, Refugee Matt and Tim would come out to the ring, Matt with both ECW Tag Team Championships. Matt announced that Vince McMahon gave the okay for Mike to be stripped of his half of the titles, and Tim was handed the other half.

Things didn't go so smoothly for Refugee Tim that Sunday at SummerSlam. Tim would be put in a triple threat match against Tyson Tomko and the returning Triple H. Triple H walked out of SummerSlam with the victory, and that same night Refugee Matt would face Chris Hunter, with the Television and Hardcore Championships on the line. Matt would pick up the victory, retaining his Hardcore Championship, and winning the Television Championship back from Hunter. In ECW's main event that night, Refugee Mike would face off against John Cena, with the ECW World Heavyweight Championship and Maria Kaneliis' contract on the line. Mike would end up beating John Cena, defending the Heavyweight title, and winning Maria's management. The next week, Tim and Matt would face off in a tag team match against Chris Hunter and Tyson Tomko. Tim and Matt would pick up a victory over the duo. After the match, ECW Champion Refugee Mike came to the ring with Maria to congratulate the duo on their victory. He went on to explain that, following his win at SummerSlam, he didn’t think he had behaved like his normal self when he attacked both Matt and Fergie. Matt, Tim, and Fergie accepted his apology, with Fergie going on to clarify that Maria would not be getting a shot at her Women’s Championship. Mike agreed, but Tim went on to tell Mike he should let Maria wrestle if she wanted to. Mike relented, and the Refugees seemed to be truly united until Torrie Wilson came down to the ring. Torrie seemed to be inspired by the show of unity, and became distressed upon realizing her group, the Legion of Doom, was falling apart. Tim seemed to feel for her, offering to take the place of her departing team. Fergie stepped in at this point, letting Torrie know she couldn’t cry her way into the Refugees. The two Divas seemed about to fight until Matt stepped in, laying the law down so that Fergie was the only female member of the Refugees, Torrie and Maria would have to settle for managing Tim and Mike. Torrie relented, although a match was still made between the two for the following episode of RAW. That same night, Refugee Mike would face off against John Cena in a rematch for Maria's contract. Mike would pick up the victory once more over Cena, allowing him to keep Maria.

The next week, Tim and Matt would face off in a tag match against Londrick (Brian Kendrick & Paul London). Londrick would end up beating the Tag Team Champions in a hard fought match. Later that night, Mike would face off against Tyson Tomko. Mike would pick up a quick victory over "The Problem Solver." After the match, Tim and Matt would come to the ring to congratulate Mike on his win, but was soon interrupted by WWE Champion, Jeff Hardy. Hardy would challange the three to a six person tag team match. The Refugees would accept, and Jeff would reveal that his partner would be Londrick, the very team that beat them earlier that night. The next night Mike would come out, and release Maria from her contractual duties. Later that night, Matt and Tim would defend their Tag Team Championships against Londrick, beating the team to defend their titles, and proving that the last week was a fluke.

On the on September 19, 2006 edition of ECW, Tim would face Chris Hunter in a one on one match, that Chris would walk away with the win from. Refugee Matt then was put in a Television Championship defense against Raven, with Matt successfully defending the title.

Fergie in 2006

On October 03, 2006, Tim would be booked in the opening contest in a Fatal 4-Way against Viper, TJ Cage, and Sabu. Sabu would pick up the win over the other three giving him a good spark of like for the group. After the match The Refugees would begin to open up their ranks. They recruited SmackDown!'s Mr. Kennedy, and none other than Sabu on that night. Later on in the night, there would be a triple threat match between Raven, Mike, and Kane, in which Raven would pick up another win over The Refugees. The luck would continue into the main event, where Matt would face off against Dana Shadows. Dana would get a victory over Matt to show that he was a true number one contender. The next week would begin with Tim facing Jino Hardy. Tim would get the victory over Jino, after performing a Bounty off the later, through a table. Later on, Refugee Sabu would face off against TJ Cage. Things wouldn't go smoothly for Sabu, when TJ Cage got the victory over him. The Refugee's luck would quickly change, with the next match being between Matt and Darren Shadows. Matt picked up a victory over Darren, making sure that nobody would question what the Refugees were. Later on that night, Mike would face off against Chris Hunter, and as always Hunter was a pain in their side, beating Mike fair and square. The next week would begin with bad news for the then-Heavyweight Champion, Refugee Matt, when he would lose his Television Championship in a Triple threat to Chris Hunter and Jino Hardy. A couple of matches later, in a number one contendership for Matt's Hardcore Championship, Tim was put in a triple threat match against Darren Shadows, and Kane. Tim would win with a Bounty to both men, pinning them both. Later on that night, there was a Fatal 4-Way tag team match. The Impact Players (Justin Credible & Lance Storm), Caliber Brothers (TJ Cage & Viper), Eric Young & Randy Orton, and Refugees Mike & Sabu. Would compete, with The Impact Players coming out on top over the other three teams. The next week would begin with Raven beating Mike in a match for the number one contender for the ECW title. Later on, Refugees Tim and Matt would face off for the Hardcore Championship. Matt would go on to defend the title, but after the match would get laid out by none other than Trish Stratus, who would be getting a shot at his title the next week. Before Matt could be thinking about Trish, he had to get through No Mercy. Only Matt was in action at No Mercy, when he would defend his ECW Heavyweight Championship against Dana Shadows, resulting in a loss for Matt.

The next week, Raven would look to make in impact as he faced off against Refugee Tim, beating Tim to prove to Dana that he deserved a ECW Heavyweight title shot. But later on that night, Matt would face off against Ashley Massaro for a shot at the ECW Championship, but Matt's luck was the same as Tim's, coming up with a loss to Ashley. In the main event, Matt would face Trish Stratus in a Hardcore title defense. It was Trish who came out victorious, taking the title from Refugee Matt. The next week, The Refugees would get a lucky break with not being booked in any matches, but it was soon found out, when they went to their private locker room, that it was decked out in St. Patrick's Day stuff, courtesy of Hornswoggle. The Refugees would try to chase down the leprechaun, to no avail. At Cyber Sunday, Scorpion was set to defend his Heavyweight Championship against a "Mystery Opponent." The Mystery opponent turned out to be a returning Refugee Mike, although Mike wasn't able to catch Scorpion off guard, with Scorpion getting a successful defense against Mike.

On November 16, 2006, TNA iMPACT! began to take off in WWEFE, with Refugee Mark being one of the first people on the roster. He would be booked on the first card, taking a loss to Randy Orton. Later on in the card, Refugee Matt would face off in a Fatal 4-Way match, where the loser would be eliminated in a chase for the vacant TNA Heavyweight Championship. Refugee Matt would face off against Justin Cross, Chris Hunter, and Hardcore Holly. Chris Hunter took the win by pinning Justin Cross. The next week, Mark would once again suffer a loss in an X-Division Championship Fatal 4-Way match against Randy Orton, Justin Cross, and Ryan Stryker. Justin Cross would pick up the win, taking the X-Division Championship. On the November 28th edition of ECW, Refugee Tim would come back to ECW after a couple weeks of a unexplained absence and activate his rematch clause. With Matt now on TNA, he had no partner. Answering his call was a former rival, Swift. Tim and Swift would face the Caliber Brothers in a well-fought match. Tim and Swift would walk away with the tag titles. Two days later, on iMPACT!, Mike would be put in a match against Ryan Stryker that he would lose. That would mark an end to an era of The Refugees, narrowing the group back down to the original three.

The next week on TNA, Mike would be put in a triple threat match againt Goldberg and Xavier. Mike would pick up a victory with an RMM. Later in the night, Mike and Matt would reunite, entering themselves into a chance for the TNA Tag Team Championship. That same night, Matt would be put in a match with Jeff Jarrett. Matt would get the win at the end of the match, making an impact in the Heavyweight title scene. The next week on ECW, Tim wanted to make a major announcement to his girlfriend Torrie Wilson, even interrupting her to do so. But it was Torrie who had the announcement to make, when she told Tim that she was pregnant. Tim would be happy that now he could have a family, but wasn't able to make his announcement due to a match afterward. Tim and Swift were set to defend their Tag Team Championships against the Caliber Brothers, but it would be the Caliber Brothers who would pick up the win over Tim and Swift. Right after this, Tim would switch brands over to TNA, joining Matt and Mike. On that week's iMPACT!, Matt and Mike would find themselves in a tag match with John Cena and Randy Orton, in a well fought victory that Matt and Mike would pick up over the duo. As a result, they moved on in the Tag Team title tournament. At December to Dismember, Mike would be booked in a Canadian Championship match against the champ, David Styles. David would get the win, keeping the title away from Mike. Later in the night, The Refugees would obtain success in a triple threat match for the TNA Heavyweight Championship. Refugee Matt would face off against Chris Hunter and Jeff Jarrett in a match that Matt would pick up the victory in, and walk away with the TNA Heavyweight Championship.

Tim wouldn't be booked on this night, but stated that he was offered a larger contract to go to TNA, and with a family on the way needed the money. He also added that he would like a shot at the X-Division Championship. Later that night Matt would face off against Jeff Jarrett with the TNA Heavyweight Championship on the line. Jarrett would pick up the win, though, topping Refugee Matt for the title. On the next week's edition of iMPACT!, Mike would start off for The Refugees, picking up a victory over Justin Cross. But their luck would soon run out, when Tim would be placed in a triple threat match with Ita the Forgotten, and Lita. Ita would walk away with the win over the other two. The next match would be Refugee Matt placed against Jeff Jarrett. Matt would get a loss to Jarrett, just like the previous week. The next week, Matt would pick up right where he left off, as he started off the night taking a loss to Chris Hunter. But later on in the night, The Refugees would strike gold, when Mike would defeat AJ Styles to win the X-Division Championship. The next week on iMPACT!, the three Refugees would be booked in a 8-man tag match, where they would be forced to team with their rival, Chris Hunter, to take on Jeff Jarrett, AJ Styles, John Cena, and Randy Orton. The winning team would qualify for the Royal Rumble match, with the exception of Jeff Jarrett who was the champion, and Refugee Tim, who was already in the Rumble match. The Refugees and Chris Hunter would pick up the victory over the other four. The next week Tim wouldn't get so lucky though, when he would lose a triple threat match with AJ Styles, and Ryan Stryker. With AJ Styles picking up the victory over the other two. Later that night, Matt and Mike would face off against Chris Hunter, and David Styles with the TNA Tag Team Championships on the line. The Refugees would pick up the victory, getting the gold in their corner, as the first TNA Tag Team Champions. The next week on TNA, Mike would face off against Matt, in a match where the winner would move up in the Royal Rumble entries. Mike would get the victory over Matt. And later that night, Tim would have the same stipulation going up against Ita "The Forgotten." But Tim wouldn't move his entry number up, taking a loss to Ita.
